AW Says: Mahjong is an ancient Chinese gambling game that is still played today. The tiles depending on the composition, age, characters and numbers can be very collectible.

The photographs above depict some of the most popular bakelite Oxblood & Butterscotch tiles.

People collect Mahjong tiles for many different reasons. Some believe that there are certain numbers which contain the power of good luck, such as the number 3 tile shown above.

Collectors of antique bakelite, will make jewelry out of pieces with interesting characters, others look to put together full sets, or runs.

The tiles above are circa 1920s

 Antique Chinese Embroidered Fabric Appraisal

I was given this beautiful embroidered piece of fabric. I would like to know how old it is and the value.  It was supposedly brought back from overseas by someone in the U.S. Military. It’s quite large, almost as wide as a king size bed.

The silk thread is as fine as baby hair. The piece is so well done, it’s hard to tell the front from the back. There is some faint Chinese or Japanese writing on the edge with silver paint.

AW says: Del, this is a fine example of Chinese embroidery. Circa 19th century, Qing Dynasty. Like so many pieces of art and antiquities it’s come to the States from someone in the U.S. Military. Generally speaking, the higher the rank, the better the items they brought back. The Chinese art world focused more on nature, where as the Japanese focused more on people and events. For a silk piece like this to be in such wonderful condition is fairly rare. However, when you consider the quality of the artwork and the size, it’s no surprise that it was well taken care of.

Retail value: $1,500

Wholesale: $900
