Rather than a traditional auction of about 200 lots, this will consist of 10-20 larger dealer lots. It will be a cash only sale, with each item being paid for immediately after it is sold. There won’t be a buyer’s premium, and it will be subject to rain or shine.
Network with me on:

This weeks question is:
The first person to email me with the correct answer to the question above, will be the winner. Now of course, I’ll need a way to get that package to the winner, so send your snail mail address along with your contest answers. The prize is a neat collectibles surprise envelope which includes things found in a recent estate purchase I made. Things likely to be in said envelope are vintage postcards, ephemera, books, old photos and who knows what?
The best way I know of to:
* Research what live auctions are featuring each week
* Find out who is selling what and where
* Find out which auctioneers sell what types of items
* Search what things have sold for
* See who is taking consignments
* Find specialty auctions
* Bid online
* Ask auctioneers specific questions
* Qualify auctions for your specific interests
* Search live auction content by zip code
… and much more, is to use Auctionzip.com the largest live auction locator.
I’ve been using AuctionZip.com for years now, and I’m proud to have them as a sponsor.

Treasure Troves are STILL out there:
One of the most tired old sayings I hear in this business, is “all the good stuff is gone.” I groan every time I hear that. If I’m energetic, I’ll usually debate the issue.
One of the most tired old sayings I hear in this business, is “all the good stuff is gone.” I groan every time I hear that. If I’m energetic, I’ll usually debate the issue.
There’s always plenty of ammunition for my argument, take for example the recent Ansel Adams glass negatives that were found. While there is some debate as to whether or not these are AA’s work, several experts have qualified them. They were found at a garage sale for $45! One estimated value of them is $200 million! Yeah, all the good stuff has been found.
Folks, there’s an endless cycle of good stuff out there because every day, every hour, indeed every minute, someone is getting rid of something they no longer want. When that stops, then the supply of good stuff will dry up, and only then.
Of course no all finds are going to be the lost works of Ansel Adams, but they don’t need to be to put a good profit in your ledger.

Here are details on a couple of great finds I had recently:
================================
850 DVD movies from a woman who watched them once and put them back in the case. I went to the flea market yesterday for a few hours, got the money invested in them back, and still have 700 left! I paid her price, she wanted to sell them all in one shot, fast. I was there with cash, we made it happen. Treasure trove for me! If an antiques ONLY dealer had gone on that call, it would have been junk to her/him.
=================================
Recently I purchased partial contents of a storage unit, from someone who had been through it. Before THAT someone else had been through it. Most dealers would never consider looking at a buy like this. But I knew the person I was working with, how they do business and know that I can take them on their word. I made my money back in one sale, got myself a high end Trek Mountain bike for free, and have about 10 boxes of great stuff left as profit!
===============================================
I could go on and on, but take my word for it, the good stuff is NOT all gone, it’s just changing hands. Same as it ever was.
How can you find the good stuff?
Well this is a relative question now. Isn’t it? For example, if I didn’t have a market for the DVDs mentioned above, then they would not have been good stuff to me. So know your market, OR if you’re a bit of a risk taker, and you should be if you’re in this business, KNOW YOUR MARKET POSSIBILITIES.

- Work: These treasures don’t come knocking on your door, you have to look for them. At every yard sale you go to, ask if they have what you’re looking for.
- Tell friends and relatives to give you a call if they are cleaning out a place.
- Harvest as strong of network as you can of good relationships with dealers and re-sellers. So many people think you can’t get great buys from other re-sellers. Just laugh at that and think, “more for me.”
- Expand your horizons. If you only look for 18th century lockets your chances of hitting it big are less. But if you open yourself to buying antique jewelry, you’re going to see a lot more. The more you expand, the more you’ll see. There are certainly caveats to being a generalist, no doubt. Familiarize yourself with those and see if that’s OK with you.
- Have a cash reserve, and let the seller know you have cash to buy. Money talks. Period.
- Send a thank you note to seller’s of great deals, and let them know you are eager and willing to pay finder’s fees for good referrals.
- Ask questions of people who have more experience than you do on a particular item.
- Send great deals to other’s in your network when they are not right for you.

North Shore Auctions
I hope to have lots ready and posted soon for an upcoming auction here on the North Shore. It does look however, that the first auction at the Todd Farm Flea Market in Rowley, will be a bit later than I’d hoped, perhaps in the late half of August.
Rather than a traditional auction of about 200 lots, this will consist of 10-20 larger dealer lots. It will be a cash only sale, with each item being paid for immediately after it is sold. There won’t be a buyer’s premium, and it will be subject to rain or shine.
Types of things you can expect are collections of antiques, collectibles & general merchandise. IE: Postcards, costume jewelry, antique books & ephemera, CDs & DVDs.
If there is any kind of competition at all, the sale will go absolute. Come out to Rowley and have some fun with us!
Once a date has been confirmed and slated for this auction, you can find details at http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/auctionlist.cgi?vuid=599

Boocoo.com 2hr auction format ROCKED!
A week of 2hr auctions for charity on boocoo.com absolutely rocked. 7 items each got between 40 and 60 bids, each got about 1,500 hits on average, and all brought over retail! It looks on the surface like the 2 hour auction format is going to be a winner for boocoo.com
