                                                                                  News from the Sea

I’ve just made a new personal relocation to Gloucester, MA which as far as I can tell, is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Being an Ocean boy from RI, it’s wonderful to get back to the beach.  There’s so much going on here, yet there’s a peaceful quality and contentment among the residents that defies the modern day norm.

There’s a yearly ritual here called the “Greasy Pole Walk” that will leave you with your mouth hanging open. I took video footage of it yesterday, but there are much better clips up on YouTube. If you’ve not witnessed this Gloucester attaction, it’s like nothing else you’ve ever seen. The idea is for the walkers to try to make it across a 46ft telephone pole that’s suspended over the harbor from a platform.

Said pole is heavily and completely greased with thick gobs of gear grease. At the end of this pole is a flag that is the object of the mission. Can you imagine the acrobatics performed?!

The event takes place at 4:45 in the afternoon, presumably so the the contestants have time enough to get an adequate amount of alcohol in them to embark on this 46ft torture trot. Only one man will make it, then the event ends and they parade him through the town! We watched it go on for hours before someone got the flag this year.

                                                                                    New Lynn MA Auction Venue

For any of you that may reside in the North Shore area of MA, I’ve booked my first auction in the area, and it’s going to be a duzy!
I’m working with a gentleman who cleans out warehouses in the Boston area and this auction is going to be packed. There is everything from antiques to electronics. As far as sheer volume goes it will be one of the biggest auctions I’ve ever done.

It will take place on Thursday, 1 pm (inspection 10-1) at the Lynn Flea Market on the Lynnway in Lynn MA.  I suggest getting there at least an hour early for inspection, there’s that much stuff!

Details here.

The new online auction site boocoo.com is going gangbusters, many of you don’t need me to tell you that, you’ve probably seen or heard about it in one of your local newspapers, on TV or elsewhere by now.

I’m happy to be working with the boocoo team as the auction consultant and we have some great things planned for the future. Look for live two hour auctions, training seminars and much more.

The site has traffic, sales are being made, and listings are going up en-mass.

Boocoo is still working on the fee structure and would like input from potential sellers on what they would like to incur for fees on this online auction site.  Right now there are no fees to sell on the site. Registration is free, and it’s very easy and intuitive to use. So after you’re done reading this, why not head over there and sign up?

Please tell your friends about this launch!

Site of the week:

SwapVintage.com

They say you are judged by the company you keep. If this is true, I’m in pretty good shape as far as my online friends are concerned! This week I want to tell you about a fresh idea in the online collectibles market, “swapping”. Yup, that’s right, trading your items for vintage items other people have. My friend and former co-host of the AuctionWally Show, Mitzi Swisher is running the site, so you know it will be maintained par-excellence!

                                                 The weekly contest:

 The last contest question was:

How many states require a license for professional antiques appraisers?

Thanks to Rick K. the only person to give the correct answer, which is “No states require licensing for antiques appraisers.”

Rick, I’ll be sending that package of goodies out as soon as I get settled in here and find the box that they’re packed in!

This week’s question is: We all know that furniture prices have been down for the last several years, but some things just defy logic! On my Prices-Realized page, there’s an item described as a “Massive Walnut Secretary”, find the slide for that item and tell me how much it sold for.
=========================

The first person to email me with the correct answer to the question above, will be the winner. Now of course, I’ll need a way to get that package to the winner, so send your snail mail address along with your contest answers. The prize is a neat collectibles surprise envelope which includes things found in a recent estate purchase I made. Things likely to be in said envelope are vintage postcards, ephemera, books, old photos and who knows what?

The best way I know of to:

  • Research what live auctions are featuring each week
  • Find out who is selling what and where
  • Find out which auctioneers sell what types of items
  • Search what things have sold for
  • See who is taking consignments
  • Find specialty auctions
  • Bid online
  • Ask auctioneers specific questions
  • Qualify auctions for your specific interests
  • Search live auction content by zip code
… and much more, is to use Auctionzip.com the largest live auction locator.

I’ve been using AuctionZip.com for years now, and I’m proud to have them as a sponsor.
