12-13-09 Newsletter - We're off to see the Wizard
Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 11:00AM This just in…
Do you have any idea what the amount is of the pre-auction estimate is for a first state, first edition of the Wizard of OZ?
The Holy Grail of Children’s literature books goes up on the auction block in a few days and what it’s expected to bring may knock you off your feet!

Along with this will be 100 other lots including a hand written signed, unpublished poem by Hans Christian Andersen, many works by Lewis Carroll and more. At the prices these are expected to bring, this auction will be a spectator event for me, but I’ll be writing more articles on some of the fascinating works in this auction. For more on this auction, here’s a slide show with details and estimates.

I‘m looking for writers:
Who want’s to partner up? Here’s the deal, I’ve got a good size following and am willing to share my exposure, in exchange for your article, news story, event review, etc.
What I am proposing is this: Send in a short article, 100-250 words, about your business, event or item. Keep the focus auction or antiques related. Said article could be about interesting research you did on an antique you have, a review of your favorite local auction, or anything else that relates to auctions or antiques.
If I can use it, I’ll publish the article and include a link back to your web-site and contact info. I may also use it in my National Examiner.com column which will bring you more juice.
Not only will your article go out to my email list, but since I’m now publishing my newsletter on www.auctionwally.com, your article will stay on my site forever.
The guidelines are: Your article must have information, value and be of interest to my readers. You’re welcome to promote your website in the article, but if the article is strictly an ad for your product or service, I can’t use it.
Please try to use good grammar and the spell checker. Send entries to: articles@auctionwally.com

I’ve launched a new website, http://massauctioneer.info
This site will be used to provide information and news about mine and on occasion, other local Massachusetts auctions.

Tips for finding and buying on Craigslist
- Set up custom searches
- Subscribe to the categories you’re interested in via an RSS feed
- Cast a wider net, when you call and find out that the gold ring you wanted is sold, ask if the seller has any other items you’re interested in. Prompting with specific things will help.
- Qualify the call. Don’t waste time and gas going on a wild goose chase. Find out if they have what they really think they have or if it’s a fake, repro, has damage or any other flaws that would disqualify it from purchase.
- If you’re really interested in an item, let them know you are going to show up with CASH

Update on Barre MA Thursday auctions:
This week at the Dec 6th sale, we had a good crowd and it looks like the locals have found us! I think we’re on track to have a great local Central MA auction.
Our next sale is on December 17th, details will be posted at Auctionzip.com
Right now the plan is to run on Thursday Evenings at 6:30pm. Of course that means, that the 2 Thursdays after the 17th, (Dec. 24, and 30th) will have no auction, as these are Christmas and New Year’s Eves.

If you’re in Central or Western MA, please tell a friend about these auctions. They’re a lot of fun!

AuctionWally Show Delay…
Some of you who listen to the AuctionWally Show may be wondering what’s going on with the infrequency of episode production. Well, the deal is, that the start-up of the new auction here in Barre MA has taken up a lot of the time I normally dedicate to the show.
The good news is, that most of the start-up work is done, and now that things are in place, I’ll be producing the show on a weekly basis again. I apologize for the delay, and although you’ve heard it before, the next episode of TheAuctionWally Show will be an “On the Air Antiques Appraisals” episode. Watch for it early this week. I appreciate your patience.

The weekly contest:
The weekly contest:
Thanks to last week’s contest winner Donna B. of Cape May NJ who correctly answered, KEENE, to last weeks question, “In what New England town was Hampshire pottery made?” There were several people answering correctly, but Donna was the first.
Thanks Donna, I’ll be sending out your envelope of goodies this week!
This week’s question:
Who is the illustrator of the children’s book, “House at Pooh Corner?” The answer can be found at the the The Children’s Literature Auction at iCollector.com
The first person to email me at wkolenda@gmail.com with the correct answer is the winner, it’s that easy. Now of course, I’ll need a way to get that package to the winner, so send your snail mail address along with your contest answers. The prize is a neat collectibles surprise envelope which includes things found in a recent estate purchase I made. Things likely to be in said envelope are vintage postcards, ephemera and who knows what?
There are a LOT of auctions out there. Knowing how to search and qualify them for just the items you’re looking for can be an enormous time saver.
The best way I know how to do that is to use Auctionzip.com the largest live auction locator.
I’ve been using AuctionZip.com for years now, and I’m proud to have them as a sponsor.
In short, if you want to find auctions anywhere in the US, AuctionZip is an easy way to search online by zip code, the site is free to search and has a million uses within the auction business, such as:
- Find auctioneers
- See the prices realized section to find out the current value of items.
- Search for items coming up for sale
- Track which auctions specialize in specific genres
- Learn how to consign to auction houses
If you have an ecommerce business, in the antiques and collectibles genre, your link may be a perfect sponsor fit in this newsletter:
