Can an auctioneer bid on an item at his own auction?

Bill asks:

I was at an auction where an auctioneer annouced that he was bidding on an item. Isn’t this illegal?

AW say: No, not as long as it’s NOT his/her item. It’s in poor form if they do it often. For example on a rare occasion when there are no other bids, I’ll place a bid on an item, but I almost never compete against my audience.
