What's it worth? Appraisal of Victorian End of Day glass
Margaret asks:
The piece to appraise is - I believe - Victorian Spatter Glass and has no known blemishes.
In the 3rd photo ( name ‘glass dish under.JPG’) the reflection is poor, but the glass is perfect. It belonged to my mother, who was given it by a friend many years ago.
It seems to be Spatter glass outside, consisting of pink, maroon, teal, yellow ochre, then cased in clear glass
It is round at base, then glass is rouched giving a heavily ruffled top
Approximately 20 cms or 8 inches tall ( to top of handle)
Approximately 13 cms or 5 inches at its widest
There is felt stuck on the under-side, but it is not covering anything - it is just there to protect. There is nothing stamped on the base, just a dip in the bottom of the glass.
Thank you very much.
Margaret
AW says: I believe your glass is European, the nubs on the handle make it all that much more charming. It appears to be consistant with glass made in the Stourbride section of Great Britain cira the turn of the 20th century. Another indicator of quality, is the high polished, or “ground bottom” on the underside.
Besides the color scheme being amusing, the twisted rib construction connotates good quality craftsmanship.
This is also sometimes called “End of Day” glass, as the glass maker would gather scraps of glass and blend them into such pieces at the end of the day rather than wasting them. Case glass is a term used as well as you already know.
