What's it worth? Appraisal of Carter's Inky Racer tin
I cannot find this tin in any Collectors Book. I have also had several online appraisals and there is no record of this tin being sold at auction or EBay. The outside top cover shows a black man with no clothes. It is marked Carter’s Inky racer. Inside the top cover is the same black man with clothes. It is marked Carter’s Inky Racer For removing Ink Spots. There is a cardboard version of this container which is marked The Carter’s Ink Co. Boston, Montreal, New York, Chicago. This tin is marked The Carter’s Ink Co. Boston New York Chicago. Since this tin does not have Montreal I believe it is older than the Cardboard version. It is 3” long, 1 3/4” wide and 2” tall.
AW says: This was a tricky one no doubt, but I’ve found reference to it. It’s circa late 1800s, and as you’d mentioned, it’s before the versions of the boxes you’ve found. (I’ve sent you a link in the email to the reference website.
The site I’ve found it on includes the contents of the tin, but the auction it sold in was a while back and the price shown did not reflect the buyer’s premium.
Your tin get’s high marks for condition as well.
