What's it worth? Appraisal of 19th century storage basket
Julie asks:
Many years ago my grandmother gave me this basket. It was in the cellar of an old house they bought in Millinocket, Maine. The measurements are: 28” tall, 64” around at the widest point, and the opening is 11”. It is in great condition, and does have a lid.
I have been told it is a hand-made Native American basket. (no idea what tribe it might be from) I have no other information about it- and again, was delighted to find your site online. I am anxiously awaiting your appraisal on this!

AW says: Hi Julie. That’s a 19th century oak splint storage basket. It’s a nice early well made and it may or may not be Native American. The form certainly looks as if it could be one, but the technique and design do not.
It could very well be made in the Native American style by almost anyone else. No matter, as without a signature or provenance, it would be impossible to say for sure. Therefore, most important are it’s quality, age and condition.
Circa late 19th century.
