What's it worth? Appraisal of Rya rug
Andrew asks:
Hi, I believe this to be a Rya rug. It measures approx 10.5 ft by 12.5 ft. In excellent condition with no fading, tears, or stains. The knotted trim on the two sides is a bit shorter in a few spots as shown in the first picture. I found it at a small auction, so I have no history on it.
THANKS
AW says: This is one of those items for which I can only be 95% sure of identification over the Internet, but I am near certain it’s a Rya rug.
We can easily say that it looks to have the yarn texture, design and colors of a RYA rug from the photos you’ve sent. (readers note: more photos were sent than are displayed here) Although I would like to see the label.
That said, many labels end up being removed. But if you just got it, be sure to check all 4 corners of the underside for either a label or evidence of where one was.
What’s scarce about this, besides it likely being example of a RYA rug, typical of the Eames era, it’s it’s size. Most of the Rya’s found are in smaller sizes. The biggest rugs don’t generally have the highest WHOLESALE prices because the large size meands it’s harder to handle, store and display.
On the other hand, the retail price of one can be set high, because when you have a buyer of means that wants it, they should be willing to pay the price for such an unusual example.
Hence the extra large gap twixt retail and wholesale prices posted here.
