What's it worth? Appraisal for Nippon style vas

Kent says:
hi Wally,

I do hope you can help me out.   I have a vase that some  appraisers here on other websites-say it is not a Nippon,  but are willing to pay $200. for it. I did have an Antique dealer here in Salem, Oregon look at it-and all she could tell me was that it is a Nippon, but did not know what it is worth-or when was it made.  I have looked on ebay, and google for a number of years-and i have yet to find one like it.  There is some damage-the rim is chipped a little. Hope you can help me out.   thxs,   Kent
nippon style vase
AW says: Hi Kent. Your vase is definitely Nippon “style” by the way, Nippon simply means Japan. The technique of moriage, and the artwork certainly indicate this.
The reason you can’t find one like it, is that it is hand painted, thus unique.  It’s post WWII era.
But the thing that detracts from it being an export piece, is that it’s not stamped on the bottom. All legitimate pieces of Nippon were. At least all I’ve ever seen or heard about. What it looks as if you may have is an American copy of or a Western copy of a Nippon vase w/ a crane depiction. While it’s charming, I can’t imagine why an online appraiser would offer you $200 for the piece. Espeically with the damage on the rim.
  • A) An appraiser should never offer to purchase an item he/she has appraised. It’s unethical.
  • B) The offer doesn’t appear to be in sync with the piece.
