Whats it worth - appraisal of hand carved ivory gazelles
Dave asks Here is the last hand carved ivory lot to appraise. It came to my family in the 1970s from Ethiopia with the other items you’ve appraised for me.
AW says: Again Dave, because your items are in a matched pair, value is increased a bit on another level, because not only does the price go up accordingly, but the ability to sell them has increased too.
The signature smooth quality of this work gives the appearance of all coming from the same tribe if not the same artist. These are a fine example of simple yet accurate form.
Although the pair is wonderful they, don’t have the life in them which the pair of elephants I’d appraised earlier do. Also, in general there are a lot more Western collectors for elephants than gazelles, hence the price difference.
