What's it worth? Appraisal of antique linen press
Joel asks:
This piece was purchased at an auction 20 years ago.
It seems to be a buffet of some sort, maybe from the
1920’s? The wood is very old and the hardware looks
to be forged iron. There is a cabinet on the top
half of the piece that opens up. The cabinet contains
a glass shelf and a drawer. The bottom half contains
6 drawers that slide out. The piece is in fair condition
for its age.
thank you for your time,
AW says: Joel, what you have is an antique linen press. Which served as a place to store the linens, tablecloths, bedclothes and other fabrics for fine homes.
You’re has is an attractive version with barley-twist posts, beveled panels and a nice mirror. It’s difficult to say what kind of wood it is made of from these pics, but it looks to be mahogany or walunt.
It’s likely an English piece of furniture and although an antique, is a copy of a much earlier piece of furniture.
Circa turn of the 20th century.
